Power Rankings Week 10

This was a big week for SOCON basketball, as we had great match-ups all week and weekend. Here are the Power Rankings:

1) Davidson (10-4, 4-0): There was no team this week as dominate as the Wildcats were who are currently riding a 3-game winning streak. Davidson won both SOCON match-ups by more than 20 points. This week gets a little tougher with WCU coming to town.

2) College of Charleston (11-4, 3-1): The Cougars suffered an emotional set-back against Wofford. Charleston rebounded nicely in a 23 point road win at Furman. A week that includes games against Elon and Georgia Southern should get the Cougars back on track.

3) Western Carolina (8-8, 3-1): After a road loss to Chattanooga, the Catamounts were in a dangerous position in the conference race with a game against red-hot Wofford looming. The Cats could have crumbled, however, they came together and put in great effort in their most impressive win of the season. Now Western must get ready to do battle this week at Davidson.

4) Wofford (9-7, 2-2): The Terriers would be the 2nd best team in the Conference had they beaten the Catamounts on Saturday. However, they haven't won in Cullowhee since 2001, losing seven straight in the Ramsey Center. They have a tough match-up this week at Chattanooga.

5)  Chattanooga (8-9, 2-2): It looks like it will be all Mocs and Catamounts going down the stretch for the North Division. Chattanooga looked good in both of its wins last week over WCU and App State. The game in Cullowhee could go a long way in deciding the North Champion. However, will the dismissal of Chris Early hurt?

6) Georgia Southern (5-9, 3-1): Georgia Southern proved its worth by going on the road to unseat previously, conference-wise, unbeaten Elon. The loss to Davidson can be forgiven, but you can't lose by 22 if you want to be competitive in the South.

7) Appalachian State (6-8, 2-2): The Mountaineers have an excellent opportunity to make a move in the conference standings with two straight home games. They have Furman on Thursday and Davidson on Saturday. The game against the Wildcats will test Capel's Mountaineers.

8) Furman (7-8, 1-3): Furman demolished Citadel and look good in doing so. The Paladins made 13 three-pointers. However, against Charleston those 3's didn't drop and the Cougars made them pay. They have to get things fixed quick with road trips to WCU and App St coming up.

9) Elon (7-7, 2-1):  The Phoenix have not won a game in almost a month. They have an excellent opportunity to reverse their fortunes this week. They will play at Citadel before traveling to face Charleston. If they cannot pick up a win against the Bulldogs the wheels could come off fast. Elon is in a similar situation as Appalachian State: their worth will be tested against Charleston.

10) Citadel (4-11, 1-3): The Citadel started the week with a resounding over UVA-Wise. However, all that went out the window when the Bulldogs visited Furman as they suffered a 32 point setback. In a match-up of bottom feeders Citadel prevailed against Samford 73-62. Citadel looks to be the best of the worst in the conference.

11) Samford (3-11, 0-3): Success rang throughout the state of Alabama this week but it was not in Birmingham. Samford lost to App State at home and then took a double digit loss at the hands of the Citadel. After its current 5 game losing streak it is clear that the Bulldogs are one of the worst teams in the SOCON.

12) UNCG (2-14, 0-4): Currently in the midst of an 11 game losing streak, it is apparent the Spartans belong at the bottom of the rankings. Wes Miller is trying his best to get his troops to right the ship but nothing seems to be working as yet.
